THE BAD.... let's get that out of the way so we can focus on the good and the fabulous.
Summer feels like an oven.
Yes it is hot, and I won’t lie, I don’t like the heat like my neighbor Rachel who goes for a morning walk sans hat at 11am when it is already a 100 degrees and says how “maahhhvelous” the heat is. My body chemistry clearly manufactured on another planet where super size hat and Air conditioning are required at all times here in summer unless of course I am in a swimming pool(with hat).
That being said I did move to Palm Springs and I do love Palm Springs and I have experienced 3 summers here with no plan on moving to Alaska or even Canada for that matter!!!
The GOOD news is that there are lots of great activities to do here that just wasn’t available ten years ago. Now more people live here full time, business’s are staying open for summer catering for the expanded population and the locals become closer and forge their community bond as it is the residents who now own the town in summer even though there still are a few vacationers here, just not to the scale of the other seasons.
Summertime Fun Staycation
So now that it is too hot for hiking outdoors I have been doing pilates group classes, yoga classes and water aerobics and LOVING IT!!! Working out in a group setting is so much fun, getting together with friends and making new ones. I love the social aspect, and I love the summertime discounts woohooo. Double endorphins. I was a water aerobics virgin and doing it here in Palm Springs with the majestic San Jacinto mountains view and a group of 20 giggling high kicking adults is most satisfying.
THE FABULOUS.......
Summertime Event? Sure Can!
Fabulous event hostess Kiki of Palm Springs Caftan (instagram @pscaftan) teamed up with Maria VerStappen of Trina Turk and decided to have a caftan get together in the middle of summer and the turn out did not disappoint. Dressing up and getting together to drink champagne and celebrate the glorious colors of Mr & Mrs Turk as well as local fashionistas and caftan artisans wearing original and vintage fashion. Color is never shy in Palm Springs and the fabulous 60s revival in fashion and Architecture has Palm Springs as its playground.
Let’s go shopping
Sales, sales, sales…the best deals and negotiations are happening now during the slower season. This is the time to go and score whether you are thrifting or at the major retailers. Get out of the house and help support the local business’s, everyone benefits.
Everyday without fail I go to one of my local coffee shops and take my notebook, computer, phone and just do my work from my cafe office so that I can people watch and smell coffee beans. In summer I am guaranteed a table and I can have conversations with the baristas with no guilt that I’m holding up the line with idle chit chat about shoes, big ears and water aerobics etc. Again the locals grow closer and the sense of community is strengthened.
Summertime Day Trips
It is pretty amazing that I can hop in my car and in 1.5 hrs I can be in Idyllwild, 2 hrs Big Bear, 2.5 hrs San Diego. We are very fortunate that we are located to easily accessible and wonderful destinations without needing to hop on a plane. Even though Palm Springs Airport is fabulous and one of the most stylish airports I have seen, sometimes you just want to be spontaneous and jump in the car and the freedom that brings with you.
Love your plants and they will love you
Air Quality matters especially when you are spending more time indoors during the heat and having lots of indoor plants makes a world of difference. Going green will lift your mood, improve your decor and make you feel so much better. I use a great app on my phone called waterbug where you track your plants watering needs and time schedule. Name each plant put them in the app and you will get an alert when it needs watering. Green thumb here you come!
Summer is nearly over and Modernism Week returns in Fall for the Preview season. I look forward to all the fun events and homes and will surely have something to say about it here. So keep following or subscribe, till next time...Stay Palm Springs Fabulous
